The best ski resorts in Japan for most visitors are Niseko in Hokkaido and Nozawa Onsen and Hakuba Valley in Nagano. For 2026–27, a Niseko All Mountain 1-day pass costs ¥13,500 for adults in peak season, the Hakuba Valley all-mountain pass ¥11,100 and Nozawa Onsen ¥7,800; Niseko and Nozawa both open on November 28, 2026. For winter festivals, the 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival (77th) runs February 4–11, and the Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Fire Festival is held every year on January 15.

Key takeaways

Why is Japan a top choice for skiing?

Japanese resorts are famous for heavy snowfall and light, dry powder, and the mountains of Hokkaido, Nagano and Niigata get reliable snow from late November until April or May. Terrain ranges from gentle beginner slopes to demanding off-piste, and after skiing you can soak in a hot spring and stay in an onsen inn. That mix of skiing and onsen culture is what sets Japan apart.

Best ski resorts in Japan: Niseko vs Nozawa Onsen vs Hakuba Valley

Niseko, Nozawa Onsen and Hakuba Valley are the three resorts international visitors choose most. Here's how their 2026–27 prices and access compare (check each official site for current prices):

Niseko United Hokkaido All Mountain ¥12,600–13,500 About 3.5 hours by bus from New Chitose Airport Four linked areas, powder and Mt. Yotei views
Nozawa Onsen Nagano 1-day pass ¥7,800 Hokuriku Shinkansen to Iiyama, then about 25 minutes by bus Onsen village next to the slopes, about 1,000 m vertical

Niseko

Niseko in Hokkaido links four areas (Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand HIRAFU and Hanazono) under the name Niseko United, famous for deep powder and views of Mt. Yotei. All four open for 2026–27 on November 28, 2026, and Grand HIRAFU and Annupuri run until May 5, 2027.

Nozawa Onsen

Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort in Nagano sits right next to a traditional hot-spring village. With about 1,000 m of vertical it has long runs as well as gentle beginner slopes. After skiing you can try the village's free public baths and spend the evening in an izakaya.

Hakuba Valley

Hakuba Valley lies at the foot of the Northern Alps in Nagano and hosted events at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics; its 10 resorts share one Hakuba Valley all-mountain pass. The largest, Hakuba Happo-one, is known for big vertical, steep runs and Northern Alps views and suits intermediate and advanced skiers, while other resorts in the valley suit beginners, so everyone can ski with mountain views.

Japan's snow festivals in 2026–27: Sapporo Snow Festival, Otaru Snow Light Path, Nozawa Fire Festival

The three winter festivals not to miss are the Sapporo Snow Festival, the Otaru Snow Light Path and the Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival; the 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival has been announced for February 4–11.

Festival 2026–27 dates Location Highlights
Sapporo Snow Festival (77th) February 4–11, 2027 Sapporo, Hokkaido (Odori, Susukino, Tsudome) Giant snow and ice sculptures, evening illumination
Otaru Snow Light Path Expected early to mid-February 2027 (2026: February 7–14) Otaru, Hokkaido (around Otaru Canal) Snow lanterns and candlelit paths along the canal
Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Fire Festival January 15, 2027 (same date every year) Nozawa Onsen village, Nagano A wooden shrine set ablaze in a fire ritual for good luck

Sapporo Snow Festival

The Sapporo Snow Festival is Hokkaido's biggest winter event. The 77th edition runs from Thursday February 4 to Thursday February 11, 2027 (a national holiday), with the Odori, Susukino and Tsudome sites all open over the same dates. Odori Park shows the giant snow sculptures, Susukino focuses on ice sculptures and Tsudome offers family-friendly snow activities; see the official site for the latest.

Otaru Snow Light Path

During the Otaru Snow Light Path, snow lanterns and candles line Otaru Canal and the old Temiya Line, lit from 17:00. The 28th edition ran February 7–14, 2026; the 2027 dates haven't been announced yet but are expected in early to mid-February, so check the Otaru Tourism Association. Otaru is about 30–40 minutes from Sapporo by JR, so it pairs easily with the Snow Festival.

Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Fire Festival

The Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival is one of Japan's three great fire festivals and takes place on the evening of January 15 every year: villagers build a wooden shrine, defend it against torch-bearers and finally set it alight, praying for protection and good fortune. January 15, 2027 is a Friday; the village gets very crowded, so book accommodation early.

Too much ski gear? How to send skis and luggage

Hauling skis, boots and a big suitcase through Shinkansen and airport-bus transfers is hard work, and luggage space on trains and buses is limited. The usual solutions are:

  1. Rent gear at the resort and bring only ski wear and protective gear.
  2. Send it ahead with Yamato's Ski Takkyubin: priced per item; ship it 2 days before you ski and it arrives the day before.
  3. Use a luggage delivery service that takes your bags from the airport or hotel to your next stop the same day.

LuggAgent offers option 3: we collect at the airport arrivals hall or your hotel and deliver to resort hotels in Niseko, Hakuba, Echigo-Yuzawa and other areas, or to your next city; choose a 09:00–11:00 pickup time when booking, leave bags at the hotel desk before then and they arrive by 21:00 the same day. See Japan ski resort luggage delivery for resort routes and Sapporo luggage delivery for the Snow Festival.

If you're going to Sapporo for the Snow Festival, hand your bags over at New Chitose Airport and we'll take them to your hotel in central Sapporo:

FAQ

When is ski season in Japan?

Most major resorts open between late November and early December and close between late March and early May. For 2026–27, Niseko and Nozawa Onsen open on November 28, 2026 and Hakuba Happo-one on December 1; powder is most reliable in January and February.

When is the 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival?

The 77th Sapporo Snow Festival runs from Thursday February 4 to Thursday February 11, 2027 (a national holiday), with the Odori, Susukino and Tsudome sites open on the same dates. Sapporo hotels fill up fast during the festival, so book several months ahead.

How much is a Niseko lift pass in 2026–27?

A Niseko United All Mountain 1-day pass costs ¥12,600 for adults in regular season and ¥13,500 in peak season (December 24, 2026 to February 28, 2027); children aged 4–12 pay ¥8,100 in peak season.

Is Hakuba or Niseko better for beginners?

Both have beginner terrain: Annupuri in Niseko and several Hakuba Valley resorts have wide gentle slopes and ski schools. Happo-one in Hakuba is steeper and better for intermediates and above; beginners can pick the gentler Hakuba Valley resorts and switch between them on the ¥11,100 all-mountain pass.

What date is the Nozawa Fire Festival in 2027?

The Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Fire Festival is always held on January 15, so in 2027 it's Friday January 15. The fire ritual takes place in the evening with traffic restrictions in the village, so stay in Nozawa or use the shuttle bus.
