Kyoto Cherry Blossom 2027 Guide: When to Go, Philosopher's Path, Ninna-ji, Kiyomizu-dera and Getting Around

The best time for Kyoto cherry blossom viewing is usually late March to early April. Japan Meteorological Agency records give Kyoto's normal flowering date (Somei-Yoshino) as March 26 and full bloom as April 4; in 2026 they opened on March 23 and reached full bloom on March 30. Forecasts for 2027 won't be published until early in the year, so plan around late March to early April for now; Ninna-ji's late-blooming Omuro cherries usually peak in early to mid-April.

Key takeaways

When will Kyoto's cherry blossoms bloom in 2027?

Kyoto's cherry blossoms are expected to open in late March 2027 and reach full bloom between the end of March and early April; official forecasts come out early in 2027. Full bloom arrives about a week after flowering and petals start falling about a week later, so the prime window is only about 10 days. Here are recent records from the Japan Meteorological Agency's Kyoto station:

Year Flowering Full bloom
Normal (1991–2020 average) March 26 April 4
2025 March 27 April 5
2026 March 23 March 30

Sources: JMA flowering dates and full-bloom dates. If you can only go for one week, aim for around March 28 to April 5 and check the latest forecast two weeks before you leave.

Best cherry blossom spots in Kyoto: Philosopher's Path, Ninna-ji and Kiyomizu-dera

The Philosopher's Path, Ninna-ji and Kiyomizu-dera show three sides of Kyoto's sakura: a canal-side walk, a late-blooming temple grove and illuminated night blossoms at an ancient temple. Here are their usual best times and fees:

Spot Usual best time Admission Access
Philosopher's Path Late March – early April Free City bus to Ginkakuji-michi
Ninna-ji Early to mid-April (Omuro cherries) Special admission ¥800 during the festival About 3 minutes' walk from Randen Omuro-Ninnaji Station
Kiyomizu-dera Late March – early April ¥500 City bus to Gojozaka, then about 10 minutes' walk

Philosopher's Path

The Philosopher's Path in Sakyo Ward follows a branch of the Lake Biwa Canal from near Ginkaku-ji towards Nanzen-ji, about 2 km in all. In spring both banks are lined with blossoms, and fallen petals form "hanaikada" (petal rafts) on the water. It's Kyoto's classic sakura walk and combines easily with Ginkaku-ji.

Ninna-ji

Ninna-ji is famous for Kyoto's latest-blooming Omuro cherries, low trees whose blossoms are right at eye level. They usually peak in early to mid-April, so travellers who miss the city's main bloom can still catch them. Ninna-ji is part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" World Heritage Site, and its five-storey pagoda framed by blossoms is the signature view.

Kiyomizu-dera

Kiyomizu-dera's spring night opening lets you see the illuminated wooden stage together with night blossoms; the cherries are usually best from late March to early April. The 2026 spring night opening ran March 27 to April 5, until 21:30 (last entry 21:00); the 2027 dates haven't been announced, so check Kiyomizu-dera.

How to get around for Kyoto cherry blossoms: Tokyo to Kyoto and city transport

The easiest way from Tokyo to Kyoto is the Tokaido Shinkansen, and within Kyoto you'll use the subway, JR and city buses. These are 2026 regular-season adult one-way fares (per JR Central; reserved-seat prices vary by season):

Transport Time (approx.) Fare
Nozomi Shinkansen (Tokyo → Kyoto) 2 hours 15 minutes Reserved ¥14,170, non-reserved ¥13,320
Hikari Shinkansen (Tokyo → Kyoto) 2 hours 40 minutes Reserved ¥13,850, non-reserved ¥13,320
Kyoto City Bus Depends on route Flat fare ¥230
Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass — ¥1,100 for adults

Cherry season (late March to early April) is Japan's spring-break peak, so reserved Shinkansen seats fall in the "busy" or "busiest" period and cost ¥200–400 more than regular season; book early on smartEX. Popular bus routes are often full, so use the subway or JR wherever you can.

Cherry blossom season with luggage: Shinkansen and bus rules

Kyoto is crowded in cherry season, and Kyoto City explicitly asks visitors not to bring large suitcases onto city buses. On the Tokaido Shinkansen, bags of 161–250 cm in total dimensions need a seat with an oversized-baggage area booked in advance, or you pay ¥1,000 on board. Changing hotels or travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto with a suitcase through packed stations is the most tiring part.

The usual fixes are station lockers (often full in cherry season), leaving bags with your hotel, or a luggage delivery service that takes them straight to your next stop. LuggAgent collects at the airport arrivals hall or your hotel; choose a 09:00–11:00 pickup time when booking, leave bags at the hotel desk before then and they reach your next hotel or the airport by 21:00 the same day. See Kyoto luggage delivery for details.

If you want to go straight to the blossoms after landing at Kansai Airport, hand your bags over at the airport and we'll take them to your Kyoto hotel:

FAQ

When will Kyoto's cherry blossoms bloom in 2027?

The official 2027 forecasts haven't been published yet; weather companies usually release them early in the year. JMA data puts Kyoto's normal flowering on March 26 and full bloom on April 4, and in 2026 the dates were March 23 and March 30, so plan around late March to early April.

How many days do I need for cherry blossoms in Kyoto?

Plan at least 2–3 days: one day for the Philosopher's Path with Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji, one for Kiyomizu-dera and Gion (with the night opening), and half a day for Ninna-ji or Arashiyama. Ninna-ji's Omuro cherries bloom late, so visitors arriving in early to mid-April can still see them.

How much does Ninna-ji cost in cherry season?

During the spring Omuro Hana Matsuri Ninna-ji charges a special admission of ¥800 for adults, free for high school, junior high and elementary students; the Goten garden is a separate ¥800. It's about 3 minutes' walk from Randen Omuro-Ninnaji Station.

When is Kiyomizu-dera's cherry blossom illumination?

Kiyomizu-dera's 2026 spring night opening ran from March 27 to April 5, open until 21:30 with last entry at 21:00. The 2027 dates haven't been announced but usually fall in late March to early April; admission is ¥500 for adults.

Should I book the Tokyo–Kyoto Shinkansen early in cherry season?

Yes. Cherry season coincides with Japan's spring break, so reserved seats are in the busy period: the Nozomi is ¥14,170 in regular season, plus ¥200–400 in busy periods. Bags of 161–250 cm in total dimensions need a seat with an oversized-baggage area.
