Things to Do Near Kansai Airport: Rinku Town, Rinku Premium Outlets and Izumisano

The best thing to do near Kansai Airport is Rinku Town in Izumisano, right across the water. Take the Nankai Airport Line or the JR Kansai Airport Line from Kansai Airport Station to Rinku Town Station (about 6 minutes, ¥370), then walk about 6 minutes to Rinku Premium Outlets, around 250 stores open 10:00–20:00; Rinku Park, where you can watch the sun set over the sea, is a 5-minute walk the other way. Shopping plus the sunset fills about half a day, which makes it a natural fit for your arrival or departure day. The real problem is luggage: dragging a big suitcase around an outlet mall is tiring.

Key takeaways

How do you get from Kansai Airport to Rinku Town? Train vs Skyshuttle bus

The fastest way from Kansai Airport to Rinku Town is the train: Nankai and JR both leave from Kansai Airport Station next to Terminal 1 and reach Rinku Town Station in about 6 minutes. To be dropped at the outlet entrance, take the Skyshuttle bus.

Option Board at Get off at Journey time Adult one-way fare Frequency
Nankai Airport Line (Airport Express etc.) Kansai Airport Station Rinku Town Station About 6 min ¥370 Frequent
JR Kansai Airport Line (Kansai Airport Rapid) Kansai Airport Station Rinku Town Station About 6 min ¥370 Frequent; JR Pass valid
Skyshuttle bus Kansai Airport Terminal 1 Rinku Premium Outlets About 15 min ¥300 About 9 a day (from the airport 9:40–18:00)

Fares were checked on a route-search site in October 2026; the JR Haruka limited express does not stop at Rinku Town. The Skyshuttle takes no reservations and you load your own bags; buses from the outlets to the airport run 10:05–17:30 (Kansai Airport Transportation). If you use Terminal 2, take the shuttle bus to Terminal 1 first.

How to plan a Rinku Town half-day on arrival or departure day

Allow 4–5 hours for a Rinku Town half-day: 2–3 hours at the outlets, then the sunset at Rinku Park. On arrival day, shop after a morning landing and head into the city in the evening; on departure day, start from your city hotel and fly out in the evening.

Arrival day: land in the morning, see Rinku Town, then head into the city

  1. After baggage claim, deal with your bags first (send them to your hotel with a delivery service, or store them at the airport).
  2. Take Nankai or JR from Kansai Airport Station to Rinku Town Station, about 6 minutes.
  3. Walk about 6 minutes to Rinku Premium Outlets, which opens at 10:00.
  4. In the late afternoon, walk to the Taikobashi bridge or Marble Beach in Rinku Park for the sunset.
  5. From Rinku Town, the Nankai Airport Express reaches Namba in about 40 minutes for ¥820, and the JR Kansai Airport Rapid reaches Tennoji in about 50 minutes; for Kyoto, change at Tennoji or Shin-Osaka.

Departure day: start from your Osaka or Kyoto hotel, shop, then fly

  1. Check out in the morning and hand your bags to the front desk or a delivery service to be taken straight to Kansai Airport.
  2. Take Nankai or JR to Rinku Town Station with nothing to carry, then shop and have lunch.
  3. Ride the train back to the airport (about 6 minutes), or take the Skyshuttle straight to Terminal 1.
  4. Arrive at the airport at the time your airline recommends. From November 2026, tax refunds need a customs check before check-in, so leave extra time.

Is Rinku Premium Outlets worth it? Hours, lockers and tax refunds

Rinku Premium Outlets is a large outlet mall designed like a port town in the American South, with around 250 international and Japanese brand stores. It's open 10:00–20:00, about a 6-minute walk from Rinku Town Station.

There are coin lockers in several spots on the 1st and 2nd floors, from ¥300 to ¥1,000; the largest, a wide locker 116 cm tall, costs ¥1,000. Bags that don't fit can be left at the Main Side 1F Information Center or the Sea Side 1F Welcome Center for ¥1,000 per bag per day, cash only (outlet website). The Welcome Center is a JNTO-certified tourist information office, and both desks exchange foreign banknotes into yen.

How do tax refunds work from November 2026?

For purchases from November 1, 2026, tax-free shops charge the tax-inclusive price; when you leave Japan, you show your passport at a customs confirmation terminal at the airport, and once customs confirms the goods are going abroad, the consumption tax is refunded. According to the Japan Tourism Agency, this must be done within 90 days of purchase and before you check in your bags, with the goods on you; if one item on a receipt is missing, nothing on that receipt is refunded. The threshold is ¥5,000 before tax at the same store on the same day.

Rinku Park and Marble Beach: watching the sunset near Kansai Airport

Rinku Park is about 300 m northwest of Rinku Town Station; from the ticket gates it's about a 5-minute walk to the Taikobashi bridge. It's open 24 hours and free. It has a symbol garden with an inner lagoon and the Fountain of the Four Seasons, and a seaside garden facing Marble Beach. You can watch planes take off and, on clear days, see the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and Awaji Island.

The sunset from Marble Beach, a shore covered in white pebbles, is on Japan's "100 Best Sunsets" list. Seen from the Taikobashi bridge, the Fountain of the Four Seasons lies due west, so at the spring and autumn equinoxes the sun sets right behind it (Rinku Park website). The water gets deep suddenly, and swimming is not allowed.

Date (2026) Sunset in Osaka
October 15 17:24
November 1 17:05
November 15 16:54
December 1 16:47

Sunset times are the Osaka figures from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan; Rinku Town differs by only a minute or two. Note: from November 2 to 19, 2026, parts of the symbol garden and Marble Beach are closed for the National Convention for Enriching the Sea, and the whole symbol garden closes from 9:30 on November 14, so check the park's notices first.

With more time: the Izumisano Fishery Co-op Aozora Market

For seafood, head to the Izumisano Fishery Co-op Aozora Market next to Izumisano fishing port. Run directly by the fishery cooperative, it has fish stalls selling the day's catch and a sushi restaurant on the 1st floor, and a restaurant and barbecue area on the 2nd. It's open 10:00–17:00; a taxi from Rinku Town Station or Nankai Izumisano Station costs about ¥700 (Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau).

Also note that Rinku Pleasure Town SEACLE, the shopping complex next to Rinku Town Station, has announced it will close on October 31, 2026.

Visiting Rinku Town with luggage: 3 options compared

Big bags make Rinku Town hard work. The outlet is split into a Main Side and a Sea Side, and pushing a suitcase around for 2–3 hours before walking to the beach takes the fun out of the half-day. There are three common options; which one suits you depends on whether you're going "back to the airport" or "into the city" afterwards.

Option What happens to your bags Best for Watch out for
Store them at the outlets or Rinku Town Station Outlet information desks (¥1,000 per bag per day) or Rinku Machi-dokoro at the station People travelling on from Rinku Town Station You still carry your bags on the train afterwards
Hand them to Yamato's Kansai Airport counter Terminal 1, 4th floor: drop off by 12:30 for delivery after 18:00 the same day to lodgings in Osaka City and Kyoto City Morning arrivals checking in at night Afternoon arrivals miss it; not for departure day
Send them straight to your hotel or the airport Hand over in the arrivals hall or at your hotel; they go to your next stop Arrival day heading into the city, or departure day starting from the city Book in advance and check the handover and delivery times

Rinku Machi-dokoro is on the 2nd floor of Rinku Papilio, right in front of the Rinku Town Station ticket gates, open 8:00–21:00 every day (Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau).

LuggAgent sends your bags straight to your next stop. On arrival day, hand them to an agent with a LuggAgent sign in the arrivals hall (airport pickup 09:00–18:00) and go to Rinku Town empty-handed; your bags reach your city hotel's front desk by 21:00 the same day (18:00 with priority delivery). On departure day, hand them over at your hotel's front desk and they're handed back to you in person at Kansai Airport (we recommend a delivery time at least 2 hours before your flight departs), so you can do the customs tax-refund check before checking in. Most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page. If you're picked up at a homestay or Airbnb, meet the driver in person at the pickup time you chose (09:00–11:00) with your bags; if your bags are delivered to one (you don't need to be there), send the full address and entry information (door code, key box or building access) by 13:00 local time on the service day. For coverage and time slots, see Osaka luggage delivery.

FAQ

How long does it take from Kansai Airport to Rinku Premium Outlets?

Nankai or JR to Rinku Town Station takes about 6 minutes for ¥370, followed by a walk of about 6 minutes to the outlets. The Skyshuttle bus from Terminal 1 goes direct in about 15 minutes for ¥300, but there are only about 9 a day.

Can I visit Rinku Town on a layover?

If you have enough time, yes, but you must enter Japan (visa rules depend on your passport) and allow time to check in and clear security again. The ride is only about 6 minutes, but the outlets need at least 2 hours, so a short layover isn't enough.

Can I still shop tax-free at the outlets after November 2026?

You can still get the tax back, but the method changes. From November 1, 2026, you pay the tax-inclusive price at the till, then show your passport and the goods at a customs confirmation terminal at the airport when you leave, and the consumption tax is refunded after that. It must be done within 90 days of purchase and before you check in your bags, with the goods on you.

What do I do with my luggage if I visit Rinku Town on departure day?

If you're starting from a hotel in Osaka or Kyoto, hand your bags to LuggAgent when you check out; they're delivered to Kansai Airport (we recommend a delivery time at least 2 hours before your flight departs), and you shop with nothing to carry before heading to the airport. If you're on a layover or staying near the airport, you can also leave bags at the outlet information desks (¥1,000 per bag per day) or at Rinku Machi-dokoro in front of Rinku Town Station.
