Shinkansen Oversized Baggage Reservation: Do You Need One? 2026 Rules

Whether you need a Shinkansen oversized baggage reservation depends on your bag's size and the line. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, any bag whose length + width + height adds up to 161–250 cm must travel with a "seat with an oversized baggage area", which costs the same as a normal reserved seat. Board without one and you pay a ¥1,000 (tax included) fee. Bags up to 160 cm need no reservation, and anything over 250 cm isn't allowed. JR East lines such as the Tohoku and Hokuriku Shinkansen have no reservation system.

Key takeaways

Do you need to reserve big luggage on the Shinkansen? Rules by bag size

It depends on the sum of your bag's length, width and height in centimetres. This rule (JR calls it "baggage160") applies only to the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, not to conventional lines. Each passenger may carry 2 pieces free of charge, each up to 250 cm in total, 2 m long and 30 kg.

Bag size (L + W + H) Rule Cost
Up to 160 cm No reservation: overhead rack, under the seat or a deck storage area Free
161–250 cm Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area Same as a normal reserved seat, no surcharge
161–250 cm, not reserved Stow where the crew directs; if full you may have to take another train ¥1,000 fee (tax included)
Over 250 cm Not allowed on board –

The rules are as published by JR West (JR Odekake Net) and JR Central; check them before you travel.

How do you measure the three sides of a suitcase?

Add up the length, width and height, including wheels and handles. As a rough guide, checked suitcases of about 28–30 inches and up can go over 160 cm, but sizes vary a lot between brands, so measure your own bag. Some major stations also have baggage measuring stands.

What is a seat with an oversized baggage area, and where is it?

A "seat with an oversized baggage area" (tokudai nimotsu space tsuki zaseki) is a last-row seat in a reserved car that comes with the space behind it, which can hold bags up to 250 cm in total. Passengers who reserved that row share the space, and nobody else may use it. Non-reserved cars have no oversized baggage space.

These seats exist only in some cars and sell out quickly at weekends and in peak season; if your train is full, JR suggests booking an earlier or later one. If you change trains, you need a reservation on every train.

What changed in July 2025: deck storage without a reservation

Since 1 July 2025, JR Central and JR West have been trialling the "oversized baggage corners" on the decks of some Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen cars as storage areas that need no reservation; on 16-car trains they are in cars 3, 5, 7, 9, 13 and 15. They only take bags up to 160 cm in total (up to 80 × 60 × 40 cm on the lower shelf and 80 × 60 × 50 cm on the upper shelf), and the old "seats with an oversized baggage corner" are no longer sold.

In other words, a 161–250 cm bag still needs a reserved last-row oversized baggage seat. JR describes the no-reservation deck storage as a "trial" with no announced end date, so check the official pages before you travel.

What happens if you board with big luggage and no reservation? The ¥1,000 fee

If you bring a 161–250 cm bag onto the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu or Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen without a reservation, you pay a ¥1,000 (tax included) fee and must stow the bag where the crew directs. There is no separate luggage fare, but if the train is full you may be asked to take a later one.

Two more points to keep in mind:

  1. If you miss the train you reserved, you can't move to a non-reserved car with an oversized bag; you need to buy a new reserved limited-express ticket.
  2. To switch trains, change your reservation before boarding; you can't take an oversized bag on a train you haven't reserved.

How do you make a Shinkansen oversized baggage reservation?

Oversized baggage seats go on sale 1 month before the travel date, like any reserved seat, and you can book them online, at a ticket machine or at a ticket office by choosing a "seat with an oversized baggage area".

  1. Online: use smartEX, EX Reservation, JR West's e5489 or JR Kyushu's online train reservation, and select an oversized baggage seat when you choose your seat.
  2. At the station: pick "seat with an oversized baggage area" on a reserved-seat ticket machine, or ask for one at a ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi).
  3. On board: put your bag in the space behind your seat, close to the seatback, so it doesn't block the aisle.

How do JR Pass holders reserve one?

JR Pass holders can reserve an oversized baggage seat for free. Book online through the "JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation" site (available since June 2020) or at a reserved-seat ticket machine or ticket office; the Nozomi still requires a separate special ticket.

Do the Tohoku and Hokuriku Shinkansen require a reservation for big luggage?

No. The oversized-baggage reservation applies only to the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen. JR East's Tohoku, Hokkaido, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Yamagata and Akita Shinkansen have no oversized baggage seats, and their on-board luggage areas can be used without a reservation (some train types don't have them).

Line 161–250 cm bag Fee without reservation
Tokaido, Sanyo Shinkansen Oversized baggage seat required ¥1,000
Kyushu, Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen Oversized baggage seat required (except on all-non-reserved trains) ¥1,000
Tohoku, Hokkaido, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Yamagata, Akita Shinkansen No reservation; use on-board luggage areas None

On every line, the common allowance of 2 pieces per person, each up to 250 cm and 30 kg, still applies. On JR East lines the location and number of luggage areas vary by train type and can fill up in peak season, so get to the platform early.

Do strollers, golf bags and ski bags count as oversized baggage?

No. Strollers, sports equipment and musical instruments are exempt from the oversized baggage rule and can be taken on board without a reservation; but if you want to use the space behind the last row, you need to reserve an oversized baggage seat. Sports gear that fits in a bag or case and can stand upright in the car may be carried even if it's longer than the 2 m limit.

Don't want to fight for an oversized baggage seat? Send your bags to your next hotel

Each car has only one last row of oversized baggage seats, and on holidays and weekends they often sell out as soon as booking opens. Even with a seat, you still have to drag a big suitcase through subway transfers and station stairs. JR Central's own page also points to "LUGGAGE EXPRESS", a same-day delivery service run with JTB between some hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto or Osaka, and to TA-Q-BIN parcel delivery, as ways to keep your bags off the train.

Another option is LuggAgent: choose a 09:00–11:00 pickup time when booking and leave your bags at your Tokyo hotel's front desk before then (no need to wait for the driver), and they reach your next hotel in Kyoto or Osaka by 18:00 or 21:00 the same day, depending on the option you choose, while you ride the Shinkansen with just a day bag. Most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page. Standard bags can be up to 32 kg and 180 cm; golf bags, ski bags and other oversized items up to 25 kg and 250 cm. See Tokyo ⇄ Osaka & Kyoto luggage delivery for details.

FAQ

Does a Shinkansen oversized baggage seat cost extra?

No. A seat with an oversized baggage area costs the same as a normal Ordinary or Green Car reserved seat, with no surcharge, and JR Pass holders can reserve one for free. The only extra cost is the ¥1,000 (tax included) fee if you bring a 161–250 cm bag on board without a reservation.

Do I need to reserve a seat for a 28-inch suitcase on the Shinkansen?

It depends on the actual total of the three sides, not the inch size. If length + width + height (including wheels and handles) is 160 cm or less, no reservation is needed; if it's over 160 cm and up to 250 cm, you must reserve an oversized baggage seat on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen. A 28-inch suitcase is often close to 160 cm, so measure it before you go.

Where do I put luggage up to 160 cm on the Shinkansen?

Bags up to 160 cm can go on the overhead rack, under your seat, or in the no-reservation deck storage areas on some Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen cars (on trial since July 2025, in cars 3, 5, 7, 9, 13 and 15 of 16-car trains). Each bag in the deck storage must fit within 80 × 60 × 40 cm (lower shelf) or 80 × 60 × 50 cm (upper shelf).

Do I need to reserve big luggage on the Tohoku or Hokuriku Shinkansen?

No. The Tohoku, Hokkaido, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Yamagata and Akita Shinkansen have no oversized-baggage reservation system and no ¥1,000 fee; you can use the on-board luggage areas without booking. The common limit of 2 pieces per person, each up to 250 cm and 30 kg, still applies.

When can I book a Shinkansen oversized baggage seat?

Like other reserved seats, they go on sale 1 month before the travel date. Book online through smartEX, EX Reservation, e5489 or JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, or at a reserved-seat ticket machine or ticket office; during holidays, book as soon as sales open.
