Tokyo to Kyoto Shinkansen Guide 2026: Fares, JR Pass and Luggage Rules

The fastest Tokyo to Kyoto Shinkansen is the Nozomi: about 2 hours 15 minutes and ¥14,170 for a reserved seat in regular season (¥13,320 non-reserved). The Hikari takes about 2 hours 40 minutes and costs ¥13,850 reserved. JR Pass holders ride the Hikari free and, since October 2023, can take the Nozomi with a ¥4,960 special ticket. Bags of 161–250 cm need a reserved oversized-baggage seat, which costs nothing extra; boarding without one costs ¥1,000.

Key takeaways

How long is the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto? Nozomi vs Hikari vs Kodama

The Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto takes between about 2 hours 15 minutes and 3 hours 40 minutes, depending on how many stops the train makes. Up to 12 Nozomi trains an hour run between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, so during the day you rarely wait long. The Hikari makes a few more stops, and the Kodama stops at every station.

Train Journey time (approx.) Non-reserved Reserved (regular season) With a JR Pass
Nozomi 2 h 15 min ¥13,320 ¥14,170 Special ticket required (¥4,960)
Hikari 2 h 40 min ¥13,320 ¥13,850 Free
Kodama 3 h 40 min ¥13,320 ¥13,850 Free

These are one-way adult fares from Tokyo Station in regular season; children (ages 6–11) pay roughly half. Journey times vary by train, so check the timetable on JR Central or smartEX before you travel.

How much is the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto in 2026?

A one-way Shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto costs from ¥13,320 in 2026, and a reserved seat costs ¥13,850–¥14,170 in regular season. JR Central did not raise Tokaido Shinkansen fares in 2026 (the March 2026 fare increase was JR East's), so prices are the same as in 2025.

Do reserved-seat fares change by season?

Yes. The reserved-seat charge changes across four seasons depending on your travel date, while non-reserved fares stay the same all year.

Season Reserved-seat adjustment Nozomi reserved (Tokyo → Kyoto)
Busiest (e.g. Golden Week, New Year) +¥400 ¥14,570
Peak (e.g. long weekends, summer holidays) +¥200 ¥14,370
Regular ±¥0 ¥14,170
Off-peak (quiet weekdays) −¥200 ¥13,970

Green Car and smartEX prices

A Green Car (first class) seat costs ¥18,720 on the Hikari and ¥19,040 on the Nozomi in regular season. Booking a reserved seat on smartEX, JR Central's official online booking service, saves about ¥200 per ticket (¥13,970 on the Nozomi, ¥13,650 on the Hikari/Kodama), and booking early may get you a limited-availability "Hayatoku" discount fare.

Can you use the JR Pass on the Nozomi? Prices and whether it's worth it

Yes. Since October 2023, JR Pass holders can ride the Nozomi by buying a "special ticket for NOZOMI and MIZUHO", which costs ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Kyoto. On the Hikari and Kodama, the base fare, the limited express charge and seat reservations are all covered by the pass.

Duration Ordinary (official website) Ordinary (overseas agent) Green (official website) Green (overseas agent)
7 days ¥50,000 ¥53,000 ¥70,000 ¥74,000
14 days ¥80,000 ¥84,000 ¥110,000 ¥116,000
21 days ¥100,000 ¥105,000 ¥140,000 ¥147,000

These are adult prices; children (ages 6–11) pay about half. Exchange orders from overseas agents are sold at the higher prices, while the official Japan Rail Pass website still sells at the lower ones. JR says prices are subject to change, so the price shown at the time of purchase applies.

How do you buy the Nozomi special ticket?

You can only buy the special ticket while holding a valid JR Pass. It goes on sale one month before the travel date and is sold at reserved-seat ticket machines, Midori-no-madoguchi ticket offices and Travel Service Centers at JR stations. Ordinary Car pass holders can buy reserved or non-reserved Ordinary Car special tickets, while Green Car special tickets are only for Green Car pass holders; see the official page for details.

Is the JR Pass worth it just for Tokyo to Kyoto?

For a simple Tokyo–Kyoto round trip, usually not. A reserved Nozomi round trip costs about ¥28,340, far below the ¥50,000 for a 7-day pass. Unless you also plan long trips within those seven days, such as to Hiroshima, Kanazawa or Tohoku, individual tickets or smartEX will be cheaper.

How do you book a Shinkansen seat? smartEX and JR Pass reservation steps

The easiest way to book a Shinkansen seat is online: use smartEX if you don't have a JR Pass, or the official JR Pass reservation site if you do. You can also book at station ticket machines or a Midori-no-madoguchi ticket office. Reserved seats, including oversized-baggage seats, go on sale one month before the travel date.

Booking on smartEX (without a JR Pass)

  1. Register on the smartEX website or app with a credit card (no annual fee; 3-D Secure authentication is required).
  2. Choose the date, "Tokyo" as your departure station and "Kyoto" as your arrival station, then pick a train and seat. If you have large luggage, choose a seat with an oversized baggage area.
  3. Pay by credit card and receive a QR code ticket, or link a transport IC card instead.
  4. On the day, scan the QR code at the Shinkansen gate or collect a paper ticket from a ticket machine. You can change your booking as many times as you like before departure.

Booking online with the JR Pass

If you bought your JR Pass on the official Japan Rail Pass website, you can reserve seats on the "JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation" site free of charge, even before you pick up your pass. Then collect your reserved-seat ticket from a reserved-seat ticket machine or a Midori-no-madoguchi ticket office at a JR station.

Booking at a reserved-seat ticket machine

  1. Scan the QR code on your JR Pass with the machine's reader (or enter the reservation number printed on the pass), then enter your passport number.
  2. Enter the travel section "Tokyo → Kyoto", the date and time, then choose a train and facilities (such as a seat with an oversized baggage area). If you already booked online, select the itinerary you want to issue.
  3. Check that the details are correct, then issue the ticket.

Some JR stations don't have reserved-seat ticket machines. To change or cancel a ticket after it has been issued, go to a Midori-no-madoguchi ticket office.

Show your JR Pass at a Midori-no-madoguchi ticket office (みどりの窓口), a Travel Service Center or a JR-affiliated travel agency, and staff will book your seat for you. Opening hours vary by station. If you have large luggage, tell the staff you need a "seat with an oversized baggage area".

Shinkansen luggage rules: what to do with large suitcases

Since May 2020, the Tokaido Shinkansen has required passengers with bags measuring 161–250 cm in total (length + width + height) to reserve a "seat with an oversized baggage area". Bags of up to 160 cm can go on the overhead rack or under your seat, and anything over 250 cm can't be brought on board at all. Under JR rules, each passenger can bring two pieces of luggage free of charge, each weighing up to 30 kg and no longer than 2 m.

Luggage size (length + width + height) Rule Cost
Up to 160 cm No reservation needed; use the rack or the space under the seat Free
161–250 cm Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area Same as a regular reserved seat, no surcharge
161–250 cm without a reservation Place it where the crew directs ¥1,000 fee (tax included)
Over 250 cm Not allowed on board –

Where are the seats with an oversized baggage area?

These are the seats in the last row of a car, and your bag goes in the space behind them. JR Pass holders can reserve them free of charge. Some cars also have an oversized baggage compartment, which needs a reservation and holds one bag of up to 80 × 60 × 40 cm, while non-reserved cars have no oversized space. Strollers, musical instruments and sports equipment are exempt from the size rules, but you still need a reservation to use the space behind the last row; see JR Central's official guide for details.

Don't want to carry your bags? Send them straight to Kyoto

Even with an oversized-baggage seat, only the last row of each car has the space, and these seats sell out quickly in peak season. Dragging two large suitcases and a stroller through subway transfers and station stairs is also exhausting.

FAQ

Can I use the JR Pass on the Nozomi?

Yes, but you need to buy a special ticket. Since October 2023, JR Pass holders who want to ride the Nozomi or Mizuho must buy a "special ticket", which costs ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Kyoto at reserved-seat ticket machines or ticket offices. The Hikari and Kodama need no extra payment.

How much is a one-way Shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto?

In 2026, a regular-season one-way adult ticket costs ¥13,320 non-reserved, ¥13,850 reserved on the Hikari/Kodama and ¥14,170 reserved on the Nozomi. Reserved seats cost ¥200–¥400 more in peak seasons and ¥200 less in off-peak season, and booking a reserved seat on smartEX saves about ¥200.

How long does the Shinkansen take from Tokyo to Kyoto?

The Nozomi takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, the Hikari about 2 hours 40 minutes and the Kodama about 3 hours 40 minutes. The Nozomi runs most often, with up to 12 trains an hour on the Tokaido Shinkansen and usually one every 10–15 minutes during the day.

Do I have to pay extra for an oversized luggage seat on the Shinkansen?

No. Bags of 161–250 cm need a reserved "seat with an oversized baggage area", which costs the same as a regular reserved seat, and JR Pass holders can reserve one free of charge. If you board with such a bag without a reservation, you pay a ¥1,000 fee (tax included).

Can I bring a stroller on the Shinkansen?

Yes. Like musical instruments and sports equipment, strollers are exempt from the 160 cm luggage size rule and can be brought on board without a reservation. If you want to keep the stroller in the space behind the last row, however, you need to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area, which costs the same as a regular reserved seat.
