Seoul shopping areas and how to get there

Myeongdong: where should you buy K-beauty?

Myeongdong has Seoul's densest cluster of beauty shops: chain drugstores such as Olive Young and flagship stores of the big Korean skincare brands are all within walking distance, and most offer tax refunds. From late afternoon the main streets fill with food stalls selling hotteok, tteokbokki and skewers to eat as you browse.

Hongik Univ. Station is served by both Line 2 and AREX, making Hongdae the easiest shopping area to reach from the airports.

How do tax refunds work in Korea in 2026?

You can claim a tax refund in Korea on purchases of ₩15,000 or more per receipt, either instantly in the shop or at an airport or downtown refund counter. The rules below follow VISITKOREA's official guide:

How do you claim a tax refund at Incheon Airport?

  2. Show the goods and receipts to customs to get export confirmation.
  3. Check your bags at the baggage counter.
  4. Take your passport and receipts to a refund counter or kiosk; cash refunds can be collected in the duty-free area after security.

Do Taiwanese travellers need a K-ETA for Korea?

Taiwanese travellers don't need a K-ETA for short trips to Korea in 2026. Korea's Ministry of Justice extended the temporary K-ETA exemption by another year, to December 31, 2026 (Korea time), for the countries and regions already on the exemption list.

Too many shopping bags in Seoul: what do you do with your luggage?

The classic Seoul shopping problem is buying more than you planned: after check-out you want another half day in Myeongdong or Dongdaemun, but dragging a suitcase through the subway is hard work and lockers at popular stations are often full. At the airport you also have to show refund goods to customs before checking your bags, which takes longer when your luggage is overflowing.

There are three common fixes:

  1. Leave your bags at the hotel front desk after check-out and come back for them (a detour).
  2. Use station lockers (large lockers are limited).
  3. Use a luggage delivery service to send your bags straight to the airport or your next hotel.

LuggAgent can pick up your bags at your hotel or guesthouse in Seoul and deliver them the same day to Incheon or Gimpo Airport or your next hotel, so you can shop hands-free until the last minute; see Seoul luggage delivery for coverage. Keep goods you're claiming a tax refund on in your carry-on, or get to the airport early, so you can show them to customs.
