Seoul to Busan with Luggage: KTX Rules, Where Big Suitcases Go, and Same-Day Hotel Delivery
Travelling from Seoul to Busan with luggage is easiest on the KTX: trains from Seoul Station take roughly 2 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours, and the standard adult fare has been ₩54,400 since the September 2026 fare cut. Korail's rules let each passenger bring up to two items that don't take up a seat or block the aisle, and space for large suitcases is first come, first served. With bigger bags, you can send them from your Seoul hotel to your Busan hotel the same day and ride the train with just a daypack.
Key takeaways
- The KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station takes about 2 hours 20 minutes on the fastest trains and up to about 3 hours on trains with more stops.
- Since 1 September 2026, SRT trains from Suseo Station (Gangnam) have been merged into the KTX network, and all tickets are now sold through Korail.
- Korail's passenger terms allow up to two items per passenger that don't occupy a seat or the aisle. You look after your own bags, and Korail is not liable for loss or damage.
- Large suitcases go in the luggage space between carriages, which can't be reserved. Smaller bags go on the overhead racks.
- A same-day luggage delivery service can collect your bags from a Seoul hotel front desk in the morning and deliver them to your Busan hotel by the evening.
Seoul to Busan: KTX vs SRT vs flight compared
For most travellers the KTX is the best way from Seoul to Busan: it runs city centre to city centre, needs no check-in, and is about as fast door to door as flying. Choose the train from Suseo if you're staying in Gangnam, and fly only if you're already near Gimpo Airport or are heading for the west of Busan.
| Option | Departs from | Journey time | Adult fare | With large luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KTX from Seoul Station | Seoul Station (central Seoul) | About 2 hr 20 min–3 hr | ₩54,400 (standard class) | Up to 2 items per person; luggage space between carriages, first come, first served |
| KTX from Suseo (former SRT) | Suseo Station (Gangnam) | About 2.5 hr | Similar; check Korail for the exact fare | Same rules; same between-car luggage space and overhead racks |
| Domestic flight | Gimpo Airport → Gimhae Airport (PUS) | About 1 hr in the air, plus airport time | Varies by airline and date | Checked bags allowed; free allowance depends on airline and fare |

KTX from Seoul Station
Seoul Station is the main departure point for Busan, with trains running throughout the day. The fastest trains reach Busan Station in about 2 hours 20 minutes; others make more stops and take closer to 3 hours. Under the high-speed rail merger, KTX fares were cut by about 10% on average to the former SRT level, and the government quoted the Seoul–Busan fare falling from ₩59,800 to ₩54,400. Book on Korail's website or the Korail+ app; tickets usually go on sale about a month before departure.
Former SRT trains from Suseo (now KTX)
The SRT used to be a separate high-speed train from Suseo Station in southeast Seoul, with its own app and fares. On 1 September 2026 it was merged into the KTX: trains still depart from Suseo, but they are now sold as KTX through Korail's website and the Korail+ app, and the government said seat numbers on Suseo routes would rise by about 30%. If your hotel is in Gangnam, Jamsil or Seocho, Suseo is usually closer than Seoul Station and saves a subway transfer with your suitcase.
Domestic flight: Gimpo to Gimhae
Flights from Gimpo to Gimhae Airport take about an hour in the air, but you also have to get to Gimpo, check in, go through security and get from Gimhae into Busan. Door to door, that usually adds up to as long as the train. The upside is that suitcases go in the hold, so you don't carry them on board. Check your fare's free baggage allowance before booking, because it varies by airline and fare type.
KTX luggage rules: how many bags can you bring, and where do big suitcases go?
Under Article 22 of Korail's passenger transport terms (revised April 2025), each passenger may bring up to two items that don't take up a seat or block the aisle. The terms don't set a size or weight limit; they say detailed standards are posted on Korail's website. They also state that passengers look after their own bags and that Korail is not responsible for loss or damage.

Where large suitcases fit on the KTX
The former SR guidance puts it plainly: carry-on luggage goes in the luggage space between carriages or on the overhead racks. In practice:
- Luggage space between carriages: the only place for a 28-inch suitcase. It's shared by the whole carriage and can't be reserved.
- Overhead racks: fine for backpacks and carry-on size cases, but too shallow for large suitcases.
- At your seat: there's little legroom for a bag, and you may not block the aisle with one.
On Friday evenings, weekends and Korean holidays, the luggage space can fill up before the train leaves Seoul.
Tips for taking a 28-inch suitcase on the KTX
- Choose a seat near the end of the carriage, closer to the luggage space, so you can keep an eye on your bag.
- Be on the platform early so you board before the luggage space fills up.
- Use a cable lock or keep valuables with you, since Korail isn't liable for loss.
- Check how far your Busan hotel is from the station: a short train ride can end with a long subway transfer.
Busan Station with luggage: getting to Haeundae and beyond
Busan Station is in the old city centre, but many visitors stay in Haeundae or Gwangalli on the east side of the city. From Busan Station to Haeundae, plan on about an hour by subway (Line 1 to Seomyeon, then Line 2), or a taxi ride whose time depends heavily on traffic. Hauling a big suitcase through the Seomyeon transfer at rush hour is often the hardest part of the trip.

| Where you stay in Busan | From Busan Station | What to watch with large luggage |
|---|---|---|
| Busan Station, Nampo, Jagalchi | Walk, taxi or a few subway stops on Line 1 | Shortest trip; the easiest area if you're travelling with lots of bags |
| Seomyeon | Subway Line 1, about 15 minutes | Seomyeon station is large and busy, so allow time to find a lift |
| Haeundae, Gwangalli | Subway Line 1 + Line 2 (about 1 hr) or taxi | Longest trip, with a transfer; the main reason people send bags ahead |
If your hotel won't let you check in until 15:00, you'll also need to leave your suitcase at the front desk and come back for it later.
How to send luggage from Seoul to Busan: same-day hotel-to-hotel delivery
The easiest way to travel from Seoul to Busan with big luggage is to send it ahead. You leave your bags at your Seoul hotel's front desk in the morning, take the KTX with just a daypack, and find them waiting at your Busan hotel that evening. It avoids the scramble for luggage space on the train, the subway transfer at Seomyeon and waiting around for check-in.
LuggAgent offers this as a same-day Seoul ⇄ Busan service: choose a 09:00–11:00 pickup time when booking, leave your bags at the hotel front desk before then and send a photo (no need to wait for the driver), and they're delivered to your Busan hotel by 21:00 (by 18:00 with priority delivery). The live service page sets a minimum of 9 hours between pickup and delivery on these routes, and each bag is photographed at pickup and delivery.

- When booking, choose a pickup time between 09:00 and 11:00; on travel day, leave your bags at your Seoul hotel's front desk before that time and send a photo to customer support. You don't need to wait for the driver.

For a Seoul hotel to a Busan hotel, the most common choice:
If you'd rather collect your bags at Busan Station, for example because you're continuing on from there, you can book delivery to the station; check the handover details when you book:
If you're flying out of Gimhae Airport after your last night in Seoul, your bags can go straight to the airport's international terminal meeting point, even if you fly a domestic flight (allow extra time to move between the two terminals); we recommend choosing a delivery time at least 2 hours before your flight departs:

FAQ
How long does the KTX from Seoul to Busan take?
The fastest KTX trains from Seoul Station reach Busan Station in about 2 hours 20 minutes, and trains with more stops take up to about 3 hours. Trains from Suseo Station in Gangnam (the former SRT) take about 2.5 hours. Check Korail's timetable for the exact time of your train.
Can I bring a large suitcase on the KTX?
Yes. Korail's passenger terms allow up to two items per passenger that don't take up a seat or block the aisle. Large suitcases go in the luggage space between carriages, which can't be reserved and can fill up at weekends and on holidays. Smaller bags go on the overhead racks.
Is the SRT still running in 2026?
Not under that name. On 1 September 2026 the SRT was merged into the KTX, so trains still leave from Suseo Station but are booked as KTX through Korail's website or the Korail+ app. KTX fares were also cut by about 10% on average, with Seoul–Busan now ₩54,400.
Is it faster to fly or take the train from Seoul to Busan?
The flight from Gimpo to Gimhae is only about an hour, but once you add getting to the airport, check-in, security and the trip into Busan, it's usually no faster than the KTX's 2.5 hours city centre to city centre. Flying makes sense mainly if you're staying near Gimpo or want to check your suitcases rather than carry them.
Can I send my luggage from Seoul to Busan the same day?
Yes. With LuggAgent you choose a 09:00–11:00 pickup time when booking and leave your bags at your Seoul hotel's front desk before then, and they're delivered to your Busan hotel by 21:00 the same day (by 18:00 with priority delivery). Most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page. If you're picked up at an Airbnb or guesthouse, meet the driver in person at the pickup time you chose (09:00–11:00) with your bags; if your bags are delivered to one (you don't need to be there), send the full address and entry information (door code, key box or building access) by 13:00 Korea time on the service day.
Can I use the KORAIL PASS on trains from Suseo?
The KORAIL PASS is a rail pass for foreign visitors on Korail trains, and before the merger it did not cover SRT trains. Korail now runs the Suseo trains as KTX, so check Korail's pass page for the current terms before you rely on it for a Suseo departure.
