Stopping in Gyeongju Between Seoul and Busan: Luggage Plan for the KTX

Going from Seoul to Gyeongju with luggage is simple on the KTX: the fastest trains from Seoul Station reach Gyeongju Station in about 2 hours, and the standard adult fare on the September 2026 fare table is about ₩44,500. Busan is only about 30 minutes further down the line. The catch is that Gyeongju Station sits outside the city centre and many stays are small hanok guesthouses, so the easiest plan is to send your suitcases hotel to hotel and visit Gyeongju with just a daypack.

Key takeaways

How to get from Seoul to Gyeongju and on to Busan by KTX

The KTX on the Gyeongbu high-speed line is the standard way to do Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan: Gyeongju is simply a stop between Dongdaegu and Ulsan. Most travellers spend one or two nights in Gyeongju, then make the short hop to Busan.

Leg Train Journey time Adult fare With large luggage
Seoul Station → Gyeongju KTX About 2 hr–2 hr 50 min About ₩44,500 (standard class) Up to 2 items per person; luggage space between carriages, first come, first served
Suseo (Gangnam) → Gyeongju KTX (former SRT) Similar; check Korail Check Korail for the exact fare Same rules and same luggage space
Gyeongju → Busan Station KTX About 30 min Check Korail A short ride, but you board a train that's already full of luggage from Seoul

Gyeongju Station is the former Singyeongju Station

Older guides and maps still say "Singyeongju". The station opened in 2010 and was renamed Gyeongju Station on 28 December 2023, after the old downtown Gyeongju Station closed in December 2021. On Korail, look for "Gyeongju". KTX-Eum trains on the Jungang Line, which runs through Andong to Bujeon in Busan, also call at Gyeongju, but they take around 3 hours from Seoul.

Book early for weekends and holidays

Gyeongju is one of Korea's busiest tourist cities, and the city government has said high-speed tickets often sell out as soon as they go on sale in peak season and on holidays. The September 2026 timetable added a few trains a day, but popular weekend departures can still sell out early. Book through Korail's website or the Korail+ app; tickets usually go on sale about a month before departure.

Gyeongju Station to the city centre with luggage

Gyeongju Station is outside the city centre, not next to the sights. To reach Hwangnidan-gil, Daereungwon or the Bomun Lake resort area you'll need a city bus or a taxi. Buses take roughly 20–30 minutes to the centre; a taxi is quicker, but the fare and time depend on traffic and where you're going.

Where you stay in Gyeongju From Gyeongju Station What to watch with large luggage
Hwangnidan-gil, Daereungwon (city centre) City bus (about 20–30 min) or taxi Many stays are hanok guesthouses down narrow lanes, with no lift and limited reception hours
Bomun Lake resort area Taxi or city bus Big resort hotels with front desks; the easiest place to arrive with suitcases
Near Bulguksa Taxi or city bus Further from the station; taxis are the practical choice with luggage

Staying in a hanok guesthouse with big bags

A night in a hanok, a traditional Korean house, is a Gyeongju highlight, but it's where big suitcases are most awkward: rooms are often small, and the last stretch is often a lane taxis can't enter. Many guesthouses have no 24-hour front desk, so check when you can drop your bags.

Left-luggage options in Gyeongju

We couldn't find an official list of lockers or a staffed left-luggage counter at Gyeongju Station, so don't count on a free locker for a 28-inch suitcase. Sending bags ahead is more reliable.

Overnight stop or day trip: which works best with luggage?

It depends on whether you sleep in Gyeongju: an overnight stop means two hotel changes; a day stop means your bags have nowhere to go while you sightsee.

Your plan The luggage problem Simplest fix
One or two nights in Gyeongju between Seoul and Busan Two hotel moves, each with a train, a transfer and check-in times Send bags Seoul → Gyeongju, then Gyeongju → Busan
Day stop in Gyeongju on your way from Seoul to Busan Your suitcases would ride along all day Send bags straight from your Seoul hotel to your Busan hotel
Day trip to Gyeongju from a hotel in Busan None: your bags stay at your Busan hotel Take the KTX both ways with a daypack

A day stop in Gyeongju on the way to Busan

A day stop works because Gyeongju and Busan are so close. A sample day:

  1. Leave your bags at your Seoul hotel's front desk in the morning and take a morning KTX to Gyeongju.
  2. Spend the day around Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae and Hwangnidan-gil, or take a bus or taxi out to Bulguksa.
  3. Stay for Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond lit up after dark, then catch an evening KTX to Busan, about 30 minutes.
  4. Pick up your bags at your Busan hotel's front desk.

A day trip to Gyeongju from Busan

If you're based in Busan, Gyeongju is an easy day trip by KTX from Busan Station, about 30 minutes each way, and your luggage doesn't need to move at all. Just check the last train back before you set out.

KTX luggage rules on the Seoul–Gyeongju–Busan line

The rules are the same as on any KTX. Under Article 22 of Korail's passenger transport terms (revised April 2025), each passenger may bring up to two items that don't take up a seat or block the aisle. The terms set no size or weight limit, and they state that passengers look after their own bags and that Korail is not liable for loss or damage.

Large suitcases go in the luggage space between carriages, which is shared and can't be reserved; smaller bags go on the overhead racks. Gyeongju adds two complications:

How to send luggage from Seoul to Gyeongju and on to Busan

The easiest way to stop in Gyeongju with big luggage is to let your bags travel separately: leave them at your hotel's front desk in the morning, take the KTX with a daypack, and find them at your next hotel in the evening. No fighting for train luggage space, no suitcase on a city bus, no dragging it down a hanok lane.

LuggAgent runs same-day hotel-to-hotel delivery between Seoul, Gyeongju and Busan: choose a 09:00–11:00 pickup time when booking, leave your bags at the front desk before then and send a photo (no need to wait for the driver), and they're delivered to your next hotel by 21:00 (by 18:00 with priority delivery). The live service page sets a minimum of 9 hours between pickup and delivery on these routes, and bags are photographed at pickup and delivery.

How it works:

  1. Book online: most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page. If you're picked up at an Airbnb or a guesthouse, including many hanok stays, meet the driver in person at the pickup time you chose (09:00–11:00) with your bags; if your bags are delivered to one (you don't need to be there), send the full address and entry information (door code, key box or building access) by 13:00 Korea time on the service day.
  2. When booking, choose a pickup time between 09:00 and 11:00; on travel day, leave your bags at the front desk before that time and send a photo to customer support. You don't need to wait for the driver.
  3. Take the KTX with just a daypack; you'll get an email when your bags are collected.
  4. Your bags reach your next hotel by 21:00, with a delivery email and photo.

Each bag can be up to 180 cm (length + width + height) and 32 kg; large items such as golf bags can be up to 250 cm and 25 kg.

FAQ

How long is the KTX from Seoul to Gyeongju?

The fastest KTX trains from Seoul Station reach Gyeongju Station in about 2 hours, and trains with more stops take up to about 2 hours 50 minutes. The standard adult fare on the September 2026 fare table is about ₩44,500. KTX-Eum trains on the Jungang Line also run to Gyeongju but take around 3 hours.

Is Singyeongju Station the same as Gyeongju Station?

Yes. The KTX station opened as Singyeongju in 2010 and was renamed Gyeongju Station on 28 December 2023. The old Gyeongju Station in the city centre closed to trains in December 2021, so all KTX and KTX-Eum trains now use the former Singyeongju Station.

Can I visit Gyeongju as a day trip from Busan?

Yes. The KTX from Busan Station to Gyeongju takes about 30 minutes, so a day trip is easy, and your luggage can stay at your Busan hotel. From Gyeongju Station, take a city bus (about 20–30 minutes) or a taxi to the sights.

Can I stop in Gyeongju between Seoul and Busan without carrying my luggage?

Yes. With LuggAgent you choose a 09:00–11:00 pickup time when booking, leave your bags at your Seoul hotel's front desk before then, and they're delivered to your Busan hotel by 21:00, so you can spend the day in Gyeongju with a daypack and take an evening KTX to Busan. Most services need to be booked at least 24–72 hours in advance; the exact cutoff is shown on the booking page.

Is there luggage storage at Gyeongju Station?

We couldn't find an official list of lockers or a left-luggage counter at Gyeongju Station, and locker space for large suitcases is never guaranteed. If you're stopping for the day, it's safer to leave your bags at a hotel or send them ahead to your next hotel.

Can I still take the SRT to Gyeongju?

Not under that name. On 1 September 2026 the SRT was merged into the KTX, so trains from Suseo Station in Gangnam still run, but they're booked as KTX through Korail's website or the Korail+ app. KTX fares were cut by about 10% on average at the same time.
